Sergei Fedotov’s staging won the Martin McDonagh International Festival Grand Prix

The first Martin McDonagh International festival closed in Perm. The Special Award of Nina Mazur, vice-president of the International Monodrama Forum set by the International Theatre Institute (UNESCO), was given to Looking for the Pillowman by Leon Cain (Great Britain). The Grand Prix went to The Chelyabinsk State Drama Chamber Theatre’s staging of The Beauty Queen of Leenane (staged by Sergei Fedotov).

The festival saw 15 stagings of the Irish playwright Martin McDonagh’s plays by theaters from Austria, Germany, Poland, the Czech Republic, Great Britain, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Azerbaijan. Russia was represented by The Chekhov Moscow Art Theatre, The Tovstonogov Bolshoi Drama Theatre, The Moscow Drama Theatre headed by Armen Dzhigarkhanyan, The Chelyabinsk Chamber Theatre and The Udmurtia Russian Drama Theatre (Izhevsk). The “U Mosta” Theatre performed out of competition.

Sergei Melnikov, an actor of the ”U Mosta” Theatre, won the Special Award of Irena Nimericka, counselor of the Czech Republic Embassy, while Vladimir Ilyin, an actor of the “U Mosta” Theatre, won the Special Award of Ilya Lerner, Honorary Artist of the Russian Federation, director and producer.

The Best New Director Award went to Dmitry Udovichenko (Saint Petersburg) for his staging of The Pillowman in the Udmurtia Russian Drama Theatre (Izhevsk).

The Special Press Award was given to the Moscow Drama Theatre headed by Armen Dzhigarkhanyan while the Special Festival President’s Award went to the Azerbaijan State Theatre of Young Spectators.

Andrei Abrosimov (Kazan) won the special jury’s award for the best spectator.

The Special Jury’s Award for Outstanding Contribution to Staging of Martin McDonagh’s Plays in Russian Theatres was given to Sergei Fedotov, Artistic Director of the “U Mosta” Theatre.

Mikhail Solodyankin (The Udmurtia Russian Drama Theatre) won the Best Actor Award as Katurian in The Pillowman staged by Dmitry Udovichenko while Aleksandra Corovic (nicht.THEATEREnsemble) won the Best Actress Award as Maureen in The Beauty Queen of Leenane staged by Rieke Süßkow.

The Best Supporting Actor Award went to Mikhail Yakovlev as Pato in The Beauty Queen of Leenane staged by Sergei Fedotov in The Chelyabinsk State Drama Chamber Theatre while The Best Supporting Actress Award was given to Aleksandra Bednarz as Mairead in The Lieutenant of Inishmore staged by Ana Nowicka (Teatr im. Wilama Horzycy).

The Sarajevo Youth Theatre won the Best Ensemble Award for The Pillowman (staged by Luca Cortina).

The Best Director Award was given to Luca Cortina for his staging of The Pillowman (The Sarajevo Youth Theatre).

The Grand Prix went to The Chelyabinsk State Drama Chamber Theatre’s staging of The Beauty Queen of Leenane (staged by Sergei Fedotov). Sergei Fedotov also won The Special Jury’s Award for Outstanding Contribution to Staging of Martin McDonagh’s Plays in Russian Theatres.
